Johnny D’Amicosays
The second greatest radio show, behind the Way and the Light, American Top 40 with Casey Kasem, debuted on July 4th, 1970, not the first week of August. Lovin’ you, Johnny D.
Hiya Mark,
This might get long so… sorry. You don’t have to read it on “the air”…I just wanted, make that needed, to communicate this to you:
I was reading your book yesterday and came to the part about Howard Stern and when he came to LA. The classless, low brow, bullshit he pulled… it was chicken shit. It was OFFENSIVE! It was sad.
Since I didn’t discover you until you came to Portland, I was totally unaware of any of that. I was heartbroken and beyond disappointed to find that the M and B listeners turned on you. Shame on them. It seemed to me your stars were still on the rise when you came to Portland, and I was so happy to be part of that club, and an eager advocate for you two guys.
Like so many others, you got me through rough times. A job I loathed, getting divorced, becoming a full-time single father, getting laid off, going back to college at 44. You were always with me, be it KLOS, Adventures of Mark and Brian, Mark and Lynda (which I loved and miss) Daddy vs Daughters (also loved and miss!) Mark in the morning, and now What You Do. Always there… educating, entertaining, and helping all us listeners through our work-a-day lives.
Your devotion to your family and your kids was something that resonated with me, even at a young age. I remember deciding in my 20’s that when I have a kid, I want to be the kind of father Mark is. I only have one son, but we are besties. I have to give some of that credit to you. You were a great example to a kid, working on an assembly line, back in 94. So thanks for that. And thanks for staying on the air all this time. I’m glad you’re still at it and, like all the others that are still with you, I hope you never stop. You’re voice is hard coded into our DNA.
To those that booed you way back when… fuck them! And fuck Stern in the ass with a red hot aluminum baseball bat. (lol…WOW!)
You’re still doing it, and you’re still GREAT at it. Without resorting to low hanging fruit or underhanded tactics. That’s why you’re the RG.
Thank you Mark Thompson, for being you.
…I told you it would be long.
PS: My girlfriend and I watch everything you talk about and recommend. The list is so long we have lost track of all the shows we’ve watched. But keep those suggestions coming! You’re always right!
Wanted to say your words still ring thru when you said a dog owner will know when it’s time to say goodbye. My 12 1/2 year old German Shepherd Aries has been declining in health and today he could no longer stand and has had seizures thru the morning. The look in his eyes was all I needed to know he needs an end to his pains.
I’ve contacted an at home vet to do a euthanasia in home and contacted all those who’ve been a major part of his life to let them say their goodbyes to him.
It’s hard… it’s heartbreaking but I know in my heart it’s what’s best for him. Thank you for giving us the courage to do what’s right by our pets… our closest companions and dearest friends. Have shit of whiskey for my boy and I hope he runs free with all of our other lost souls.
Hey Mark, your thoughts on Daris Rucker, Hootie and the Blowfish, cracked rear view album? Just re-listened. So awesome. Suck balls.
STL. I know you will butcher my name RG
Hey RG! With the recent passing of Ozzy, everyone knows his story. That being said, I think if you did a Cool Stories In Music you’d really do it with flavor and class. Just a thought. GO RAIDERS!
Hey Mark, I appreciated your apology. I never took offense to that comment. I have always understood your humor. I was seriously sad when the show ended, but I didn’t take the comment seriously. We not only share a Dec. 1 birthday but the same sense of humor. I am often misunderstood due to my humor. It has cost me a lot of customers. But, enough of my customers “Get Me” so I am fine with it. I recorded a story I wrote about this fact about a conversation with one of my moms. I teach an early childhood music and movement program called Music Together. (Eleni, You and Matthew would appreciate it.) Friends told me to check out The Mark and Brian show when you arrived in Portland. “YOU will love it.” I tried a few times. Didn’t get it, especially pooping on your boss’s desk. But did start listening when commuting. It was Spring and you were getting folks to trick kids, spouses, whoever was around to go out near the pool so they could push them in the freezing cold pool. One mom said to her son, “I promise I won’t push you in the pool!” Both you and Brian yelled, “NO, you can’t lie to your child! If you do, we will cut this call!” That is when I knew that you both had integrity. I have never stopped listening. Thank you for what YOU do! Fuckin’ Craig
Hey RG
A few weeks ago you asked where everyone is listening from. The late response is that I’m just catching up on a few episodes due to a recent vacation in So Cal. I live in Sweden and been listening to you here since KLOS started the streaming service around 2010 or so BUT used to live in LA back in the 80:s when M&B joined my favorite station KLOS. And yes I am the same Swede that was an in-studio guest at Mark In The Morning and spoke to you via the screen… I live in Malmö just across from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Hey Mark, glad to hear you called yourself out on your intro bloopers from weeks ago.
Coincidentally, I listened to the Ep49 July 11th show and never heard a comment regarding the title of the episode “don’t throw fireworks down the toilet.” Ha! It was written in the show description but it wasn’t verbally said in that episode. Historically, you always title your shows from a funny statement used in the episode. I figured you pulled that “safety tip” during an edit.
Otherwise, i liked episode 49. I had a good laugh…. you finally accepted our Corporate DJ philosophies and had Alexa, a digital DJ co-host, help you with your show that day. Nice, isn’t it? You didn’t pay her or give her a lunch break nor a day off for cramps. Old Dawgs can learn new tricks. Ha!
Love the Podcast..and I will send you a new funnel for your toilet with our Cumulus Media logo and my photo on it. Im guessing you will put it to good use. Wink.
Hey Mark,
My Dad grew up in the horse racing business, and put the statistics in the paper for 50 years, he only bet once and lost. To all of us kids he said “If you can’t afford to throw your money away, then you can’t afford to bet it.” Myself I think if you are determined to gamble, take $20 and you can bet $2 each race and have fun. If you win, only bet your winnings and put the rest in your pocket.
